Steam RADS

STEAM heating systems come in two varieties:

The ever popular One pipe STEAM (95% of all steam households). They are operated by your boiler in the basement which boils the water. STEAM floats up the piping sytem to the radiators. Once the STEAM hits the radiator it cools and condenses back into water and tricles back out of the radiator throughj the same hole it came in, Back to the boiler and the process starts all over again.

Hisss, shhhhh, hiss hiss, and your skin doesn't dry out in winter.

*One pipe systems always has a steam vent on one side of the radiator*

It will look something like the Steam vent pictured here.

Two Pipe STEAMsystems are often found in "older" homes with big solid systems as well as  institutional buildings like schools and commercial units of the big citiessometimes have a vent on the radiator, and sometimes they don't.

If you fall into the category of Two Pipe STEAM, you are the caretaker of a quixotic but simple confluence of pipes running under your feet. They are a marvel of old school engineering.

Like Hot water heating systems, there's one pipe in and one pipe out. Steam comes in on one side and once it cools and condenses, it trickles back out the other side of the radiator, all the way to the boiler, to repeat the process.

The beauty of a STEAM system is that any radiator will work for you.

Feel free to check out the the selections and information on the Hot Water RADS page. As they are all good for your system.

Quality used vents are for sale. See Radical's inventory for prices.
